Hamden Adult Education General Questions Ask A Question

Question: Where do I find out about closings and delays?
Answer: Adult Education classes are automatically cancelled if Hamden Public Schools are closed during the day. If the weather deteriorates during a scheduled school day necessitating canceling evening classes, an announcement will be made on:

WTNH - Channel 8
WVIT – Channel 30
WFSB – Channel 3
WELI – 9.60 am
WDRC – 102.9 FM

Question: What if the class is full?
Answer: We will let you know right away if the class is full and will be happy to tell you about other classes we think may be of interest to you. Also, some classes are offered more than once during the year.
Question: Am I eligible to take the GED Exam?
Answer: You must be age 17 or older and formally withdrawn from school. Under 19 you must provide proof of withdrawal from school for at least 6 months or your high school class has graduated.
Question: Do I have to take the GED Prep Class prior to taking the GED Exam?
Answer: No, you can prepare on your own. However, we strongly recommend taking a practice test and classes.
Question: How do I register for the GED Exam?
Answer: You must register in person at the Adult Education office at 2040 Dixwell Avenue, Hamden. You must bring an up-to-date picture I.D. If you are under 19 years of age, a high school transcript and proof of withdrawal are required.

If you are 21 years of age or older, you must pay a $13 fee at the time of registration.

Office hours are: Monday – Thursday 8:30 am – 3:30 pm/6:00 pm – 9:00 pm Friday 8:30 am – 3:30 pm
Question: Which diploma program is best?
Answer: They are all recognized by 99% of the colleges and workforce. Individually the best program for you depends on your educational background, maturity and age.
Question: What are the fees for the academic programs?
Answer: Adult Basic Education, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), GED Prep, Citizenship, External Diploma Program and Adult High School are free to adults who live or work in Hamden. Enrichment/Continuing Education has the fees listed under each course. A $5.00 fee is added for non-residents.
Question: Do I need to be a Hamden resident to enroll in class?
Answer: Every person is welcome to take our classes! Non-residents simply pay a $5.00 fee in addition to the course fee.

For the Adult Basic Education, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), GED Prep, Citizenship, External Diploma Program and Adult High School you should live or work in Hamden.

Question: How do I register for the diploma programs?
Answer: You must register in person. Call 203.407.2028 to find out specific registration dates.
Question: How do I become an instructor?
Answer: To teach in the Continuing Education/Enrichment program send a resume and cover letter describing the course you would like to teach. No certification is required. To teach in the Basic Education/English for Speakers of Other Languages/Diploma programs, send a resume and cover letter noting experience and certification.
